A central hub of intelligence and insight is what a major broker offered us as a sponsor at the RiskIn2025 conference. A great variety of topics for Risk Managers, Insurers and Reinsurers, some challenging presentations and many provocative thoughts.
When I look back many years, at the time I started my career, brokers were a tribe we, reinsurers, called “the wine and dine tribe”. We had to put up with them and the insurance agents hated those aggressive competitors.
What a road they have since covered!
Let’s have a brief look at what an international broker now shows in their shop windows.
Their original and still most important task is to advise clients on managing risk exposures through various tools of risk financing. But they have diversified into Health solutions where they help corporations improve employee health and wellbeing while managing costs. The next step is called Wealth solutions to optimize investments results. And, finally, they offer Talent solutions where with their clients they develop talent strategies.
To put it in a nutshell, brokers today are much more than intermediaries, they are 360° consultants.
I wrote this podcast mainly for young people who are looking for a promising job. I am amazed by the variety of activities you find in the insurance industry and more specifically in the broking cum consulting operations.
And this is only a superficial view. If you dig into each of the activities listed above, you will be using mathematics, psychology, economics, medicine, finance, geology and much more.
Of course, brokers cum consultants could not be successful without a deep human approach to clients. Empathy is the word!
