Inside the Digital MGA Model: Data, Discipline, and the Future of Insurance

What happens when an engineer trained in statistics decides to challenge the structural inertia of insurance?

In this in-depth conversation, Lucio Roman, InsurTech pioneer and co-founder of Segurcel Technologies, explains how he built one of Spain’s first fully digital MGAs operating across both B2B and B2C channels.

Lucio began his career in engineering before moving into insurance IT and actuarial work within large international groups. There, he observed a recurring pattern: enormous capital and data resources trapped inside rigid structures, slowed by committees, legacy systems, and regulatory layers. Innovation was possible—but rarely agile.

The MGA model, he explains, offered a strategic alternative. By combining underwriting expertise, digital distribution, and risk capital—without the organizational inertia of traditional carriers—an MGA can move at the speed of a technology company while retaining regulatory credibility. For Lucio, data sits at the core of this triangle: every transaction feeds intelligence into the next.

What started as a simple online sales platform evolved into a full architectural redesign. Selling insurance digitally was not enough; the entire operational backbone had to be rebuilt. Today, their platform integrates underwriting capacity, service providers, and partners via real-time web services, using advanced models—including neural networks—to improve pricing accuracy, risk selection, fraud detection, and operational efficiency.

Lucio also offers a sober perspective on AI. While it creates real value in pricing and fraud detection, he cautions against overestimating its readiness to replace human judgment in complex customer situations.

Looking ahead, he argues that sustainable InsurTech is not about raising capital—it’s about structural profitability. The future belongs to disciplined, data-driven MGAs that look like tech companies but retain deep insurance expertise.
